This might be an oversimplification, but it may be
helpful to think of ChatGPT as super-smart predictive text – a
hyper-intelligent version of that which you have on your mobile
phone. When you give it a prompt, what it is doing is generating a
statistically plausible response to the prompt. That response is
based on the data it has been fed from millions of books and
webpages and so is often not merely plausible, but accurate as
well. However, ChatGPT will also on occasion plug gaps with
confabulation, including inventing facts (often referred to as
'hallucinations').

Again, ChatGPT will get you some of the way when it comes to creating the content, but it’s always wise to run anything past your compliance team. The AI tool also struggles to be concise in its answers, often coming across undecided and attempting to cover all possibilities. The resulting text tends to lack more advanced ways of expression, like irony, humour, or provocative questions. As with any technology, it’s important to be mindful of how you’re using it and what you’re using it for. There will always be immediate advantages however, if you don’t make yourself aware of the limitations, you may be caught out later down the line.

Can you give an example of ChatGPT in action?

There is no legislation currently in the UK that directly regulates AI, and the government’s current stance does not seem to indicate that there will be large swathes of regulation in the near future. In 2022 the government published a policy paper outlining to its approach to AI indicating that, whilst data security and safety relating to AI would be reviewed, it would generally support innovation in the field over a regulation heavy regime. This AI driven chatbot provides answers to user prompts ranging from requests for cooking recipes to marketing content requests and, as the introduction to this article shows, it is demonstrably competent in delivering results.

Each implementation of AI needs to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, considering the proposed uses for the system and how it will interact with other systems. At the same time, China is working hard to show leadership both on AI investment, home-grown technology and regulation – addressing specific issues such as deep-fakes whilst seeking to minimise social disruption. For example, the Regulations on the Administration of Deep Synthesis of Internet Information Services focus on ‘deep fake’-type use cases as well as generative AI-based chat services. China has also issued for public consultation its draft measures on the administration of generative AI services. These targeted measures sit alongside important regional approaches, notably in Shanghai and Shenzhen.

And virtual agents for customer service and conversational analytics are about to take a huge leap forward.

For example, CNet, which used ChatGPT to write articles, allowed significant factual errors into a published article. In another notable example, a lawyer in the US used the bot to help write a court submission which he didn’t double check, discovering to his significant embarrassment that that it cited fictional cases in his brief rather than real ones. They are designed in theory to mimic the way that a human brain processes data, and their applications expanded as computers achieved significant jumps in data storage and processing. A lingering criticism is the lack of transparency and explainability in the algorithms genrative ai used to deliver the results, particularly when the system delivers a decision that affects people’s lives such as being denied access to a loan. Generative AI suffers from the same black-box opacity, but new algorithms are delivering seemingly expansive capabilities that have yet to be explored and understood. AI models are already impressively capable when it comes to generating music and mimicking human voices.

In the US, the Federal Trade Commission is focusing on whether companies are accurately representing their use of AI. And employers are looking for human talent that can think critically for itself. Without reliable quality university reputation and corresponding grade point average credentials, industry is likely to recruit young talent without the necessity of tertiary degrees. The question is, can higher education change fast enough to avoid being made redundant?

We need to change the narrative and broaden the ecosystem’s understanding of the potential of GPT. The risk is that someone is experienced in using ChatGPT, has completed one of the many training courses that are being marketed, and then believes that they have mastered GPT.
